Georgia is actively preparing for the winter tourist season, which, judging by the government's statements, will not be canceled, unlike last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the winter season of 2021, 134,183 visitors visited four mountain resorts of Georgia — Gudauri, Bakuriani, Mestia and Goderdzi.
Due to the pandemic and covid restrictions, Georgia has been unable to hold a full winter season for the second year in a row.
This time it was decided to apply new rules and recommendations to the resorts – they were developed by the Ministry of Economy together with the National Tourism Administration, the Campaign for the Development of Mountain Resorts, the Ministry of Health, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health and the Department of Labor Inspection. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili.
The rules mainly relate to cable cars. According to the recommendations, a closed rope gondola, accommodating 10 people, will be able to carry only eight passengers. As for the open-type ropes, they will be able to work with a full load. At the same time, the cable cars and the area around them will be intensively disinfected.
As for chairlift cable cars, the new regulations do not apply to them. Nevertheless, the process of movement on both types of lifts will be strictly controlled.
As well as everywhere else, the rules for observing the distance and wearing masks will apply at ski resorts.
Tourism in Georgia has become the most affected sector of the economy. Strict covid restrictions and partial border closures have significantly reduced the number of international travelers. In 2020, only 1.7 million tourists visited the country, even though in 2019 their number exceeded 9.3 million.
