The action demanding the release of ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili will be held on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi tomorrow, October 10 at 17:00.
At the same time, the action is organized not by Saakashvili's United National Movement party, but by the public "People's Movement", which was organized by the leader of the opposition Law and Justice party, MP Tako Charkviani.
The "People's Movement" was created to unite supporters of Saakashvili's return to his homeland. Now its participants are collecting signatures in defense and for the release of the ex-president of Georgia – on October 1, he was detained and transferred to prison.
Charkviani noted that the action will be of a precautionary nature for the authorities. Its participants will also demand to call early parliamentary elections.
"I am announcing a large, multi-thousandth action. This is the promised action that we have been talking about for so long. The People's Movement announces a warning action against possible election fraud and for the release of Mikheil Saakashvili before early elections," Charkviani told reporters.
Another protest action with the same demands is planned to be held on October 14.
Meanwhile, other small opposition parties refused to take part in the rally in support of Saakashvili: "European Georgia", "gIrchi — more freedom", "Lelo" and "Agmashenebeli Strategy".
In this part of the opposition, they said that they consider Mikhail Saakashvili a political prisoner and a victim of the regime, but they do not want to take part in a party event of the "National Movement".
"This is an action of the National Movement. I won't come because I have a lot of things to do, including I need to resolve internal party issues. As for his political imprisonment, we say that this is political persecution.
Until there is a normal trial, there will always be suspicions that he is a political refugee.
Saakashvili has traveled half the world for nine years, and no country recognizes the decision of the Chinchaladze court, this is a fact," said Zurab Japaridze, leader of the gIrchi party.
Charkviani called such a decision by part of the opposition "sad", but she is not going to cancel the action.
"I heard a sad statement from Agmashenebeli Strategy, LELO and European Georgia, but this is their problem. They also have voters who will have their say, and if they do not join the action, it will not prevent us in any way … We are united, the National Movement and the People's Movement serve the same purpose," Charkviani said.
