German-Yazidi journalist awarded the Order of Merit in Germany
Yazidi journalist Duzen Tekkal was awarded Germany's highest award, the Order of Merit, or "Bundesverdienstkreuz", for her contribution to German society.
"I was awarded the Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for my activism against the Yazidi genocide, for my defense of women who survived captivity by ISIS, and for making the fate of the Yazidi community more visible. The "Bundesverdienstkreuz" is awarded by the President, and it is the highest order that can be awarded in Germany. I am incredibly happy and grateful that I received it," she said in an interview with Kurdistan 24 TV channel.
The Order of Merit was established in 1951 by German President Theodor Heuss and is the highest award that Germany can bestow on individuals for outstanding achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual, or honorary fields.
"I would like to thank everyone for trusting my work and everyone who gave me the opportunity to speak out in defense of civil society," she wrote on Twitter. This award belongs not only to me, but also to my parents and many others who supported me.
Tekkal was born in 1978 in Hanover, Germany, and became a well-known journalist and human rights activist, as well as the current chairman of the HAVAR organization.
A documentary she made called "Havar" (help): My journey to Genocide is dedicated to the genocide of the Yezidis, during which thousands of people were brutally murdered, abducted and sold into the hands of ISIS, starting in August 2014.
Before the film, Tekkal was one of the first journalists to interview a Yazidi survivor and Nobel Prize winner Nadia Murad. As a result, she was also invited to the United Nations during the ceremony of Murad's appointment as a UN Goodwill ambassador in 2016.
