The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has distributed footage of the detention of the country's third president Mikhail Saakashvili.

Mikheil Saakashvili was detained in Tbilisi, shortly after his return to his homeland for the first time in eight years. This was officially announced by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili at a briefing. The politician himself managed to record a video message before his arrest, in which he stated that he was ready for such a development of events and was not afraid of anything.

The footage shows how the Interior Ministry officers accompany the ex-president from the police car to the entrance to the prison. Saakashvili himself looks calm and smiles.

Supporters of the ex-president, who after Garibashvili's briefing began to gather at the regional offices of the opposition United National Movement party and watched the events on TV, greeted the footage of the detention with ovations.

The third President of Georgia returned to his homeland shortly before the municipal elections scheduled for October 2. In the morning, he distributed several video messages recorded in the Black Sea city of Batumi. How exactly and when exactly the politician got to Georgia is still not known.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said in the afternoon that Mikhail Saakashvili did not leave Ukraine and, accordingly, did not cross the state border of the country. The ruling Georgian Dream party called the videos distributed by the politician "fake" and his actions "clowning." Throughout the day, GM leaders claimed that the third president was in Ukraine, at the resort of Truskavets.

Saakashvili headed Georgia in 2008-2013. After losing the next election in 2013, he left the country. After that, a number of criminal cases were initiated against the politician, according to some of them he was sentenced to prison terms in absentia. In 2015, he lost his Georgian citizenship and has been a citizen of Ukraine for almost six years.

The Georgian authorities have repeatedly stressed that the ex-president has been put on an internal wanted list and will be arrested immediately after returning to his homeland. Announcing his arrival for the elections on October 2, Saakashvili stressed that he was not afraid of detention.
