US Consul General in Erbil: "The US will continue to support the restoration of the Yezidi community"
The US Consul General in Erbil, Robert Palladino, assured the Yazidi community of the continued support of the United States.
"The United States will continue to support the restoration of the lives of Yazidi survivors and the large Yazidi community," Palladino said in his speech at an event dedicated to the victims of the Yazidi genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIS.
"We are determined to find permanent solutions to help the Yezidi community recover and rehabilitate, including facilitating the return to the homes of your ancestors and healing from the wounds inflicted by terrorists on your people. We will continue to provide significant support, including through our United States Agency for International Development, USAID. The United States is proud to support powerful events because such efforts generate greater empathy in support of these communities," Palladino added.
He stated that the United States has allocated $470 million to support the reconstruction of religious and ethnic minority communities in Iraq.
Palladino thanked civil society organizations and community groups for organizing the event, such events are an important step to overcome the suffering experienced by the Yezidi community and to ensure that such a genocide will never happen again.
In August 2014, IS carried out a brutal campaign of genocide against the Yezidis of the Shangal region, as a result of which thousands of people were killed. The militant group has also captured thousands of Yazidi women and girls as war booty or "sex slaves."
"These stories need to be heard so that the world never forgets what happened and never repeats it," Palladino said.
