In the province of Erbil, the foundation stone was laid for the Registration Center for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), among whom there may be representatives of the Yazidi minority in the Kurdistan Region.

This is the first such Center to be built in the Kurdistan Region.

After its completion, refugees will no longer need to go through numerous agencies for registration, since all these procedures can be processed in this new center, Interior Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (PKK) Rebar Ahmed said at a press conference on Wednesday.

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is building the Center together with the PRK. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development financed this project.

The main responsibility of the Center is the registration of refugees.

In addition to registration, the center will also provide legal advice to refugees throughout the Kurdistan region, especially in the province of Erbil, where more than 100,000 refugees live.

As soon as the refugees and internally displaced persons return to their areas, the building will be converted into a public school.

In 2014, the Kurdistan region received more than two million refugees, many of whom fled from the takeover of a large part of northern Iraq by the terrorist group ISIS. The PKK supports Yazidi families who voluntarily return to their places of origin.

The representative of the UNHCR called for more assistance from the Government of Iraq and the UNHCR, so that the PRK can more effectively provide services to the Yazidis of the region.

The PRC has previously announced that it covers 70 percent of the costs of displaced persons.

The Federal Government of Iraq has almost closed all camps for displaced persons under its jurisdiction, where most of the Yazidi families lived, which caused concern among humanitarian organizations about the well-being and fate of Yazidis affected by the war in 2014.

In addition, human rights groups reported that Yazidi IDPs face problems at checkpoints during their return to their homes due to the lack of documents and appropriate permits.
