On September 7, the Head of the United Nations appointed a German lawyer from the UN to lead the investigations of the crimes of the terrorist group ISIS against the Yazidi population, thereby replacing the British lawyer who moved to the International Criminal Court.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Christian Ritcher as a special adviser and head of the United Nations investigation team to help bring to justice crimes committed by IS, the UN said in a statement.
Ritcher is the second person to head UNITAD, replacing Karim Khan. He previously served as a federal public prosecutor in the German Federal Court and, according to the UN, has 30 years of professional experience in criminal prosecution and investigations.
He also headed the German War Crimes Unit, which prosecutes individuals in Germany for international crimes, including alleged IS crimes against the Yazidi community in Iraq in 2014.
IS swept through the territories of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014, imposing its so-called rule of the caliphate with exceptional violence. Among the crimes of the group, described in detail by the UN, are " executions, torture, amputations of limbs, religious attacks, rape and sexual slavery imposed on women and girls."
UNITAD was formed after Baghdad sought the UN's help in August 2017 to ensure that IS members would be held accountable for their crimes in Iraq.
In September 2017, the Security Council adopted a resolution for the UN Secretary-General on the establishment of an investigative committee "to support internal efforts to bring IS militants to justice by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of actions that can be equated to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Iraq."
UNITAD stated that it had collected evidence that IS had committed genocide against the Yazidi people.
