The European Union welcomed Georgia's initiative to amend the legislation on the selection of Supreme Court judges. However, the EU is disappointed that the Georgian Parliament hastily developed and adopted these amendments without a comprehensive consultation process, according to a statement released on April 7 by the European External Relations Service.

The amendments were adopted by the Georgian Parliament on April 1.

"The European Union has repeatedly expressed concern about the shortcomings of this selection process. We regret that Georgia has already amended this legislation in a hurry, without the conclusion of the Venice Commission, " the statement reads.

The EU recommends that Georgia seek the opinion of the Venice Commission as soon as possible on whether the adopted amendments comply with its previous recommendations.

The EU recalled that in order to receive the second tranche of macro-financial assistance, Georgia should review the selection process for Supreme Court judges, taking into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
