The mayor of Shangal, Mahma Khalil, is one of the radical Kurdish officials who does not recognize the Yazidi people, Yazidi identity and religion. At the same time, he was appointed mayor of Shangal by the Kurds. Mahma Kholi has repeatedly publicly argued in the media with Yazidi representatives Haidar Shasho and Hal Ali on the topic of Yazidi identity and religion.

Recently, Mahma Khalil issued a statement that many Yazidi families who recently returned from displacement have again left the area of Shangal due to the deterioration of the situation in the service sector and security, as well as threats from "illegal" armed groups associated with the Kurdistan Workers ' Party (PKK).

This situation in Shangal benefits many Kurdish radicals who are opposed to the Yazidi minority. They deliberately do everything to make the Yazidis flee from their ancestral lands, leaving their cities, districts, villages, and homes where they have lived all their lives.

Khalil told the Shafaq news agency that displaced people are no longer returning to Shangal and its surroundings, and many families have begun to leave for other areas, primarily in Kurdistan, to save their lives from PKK threats.

In addition, Khalil revealed the PKK's plan to use civilians as human shields to counter the army forces that seek to force them out of Shangal in order to implement the agreement between Erbil and Baghdad.

On October 9, Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement to normalize the situation in Shangal without the participation of the Yazidi minority.
