The Nadia Initiative, a non-profit Yazidi organization, has announced a new project called "New Kocho", which involves the development and provision of housing, and support for survivors of ethnic cleansing in the village of Kocho. Recall that this village is the most affected by the atrocities of the terrorist group ISIL.

The village, located south of Shangal in Nineveh Province, is known as the site of one of the terrorist group's most violent and destructive acts. ISIS captured the village in August 2014, holding the locals under siege for two weeks, and then on August 15 of that year killed almost all the Yazidi men in Kocho, taking women and children captive. Many of whom are still missing.

The new dwellings will be built near the village's "old town", now surrounded by mass graves. The project will be implemented jointly with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

"My Yazidi community of Kocho has experienced some of the worst atrocities known to mankind. Those who survived the genocide waited almost seven years to return home. Thousands of women and children are still missing. Hundreds of the men and women killed have not yet been identified. Survivors of sexual violence and single mothers are struggling to find shelter and adequate support, "says Nadia Murad, a Yazidi human rights activist and head of the Nadia Initiative, who survived the terrorist captivity.

"New Kocho" will also create memorial sites in memory of the fallen Yazidis. The survivors of Kocho and the Yazidi community last month bid a final farewell to the 104 Yazidis found in mass graves surrounding the village. Several hundred plots remain empty, awaiting the return of the remains from Baghdad.

Much of the Shangal district still lies in ruins, and reconstruction efforts are hampered by countless armed groups vying for control of the disputed area. However, thousands of Yazidis returned to the area last year, tired of living in IDP camps in Kurdistan.

This project is an important step towards the dignified return of the displaced members of the Yazidi community of Kocho and the promotion of the restoration of a decent life.
