The Kurdistan Regional Government (PKK) has asked donor countries and UN agencies to provide support to Syrian refugees of the Yazidi minority who are being accepted in the Kurdistan region.

Currently, Kurdistan provides shelter to 240,000 Syrian refugees, most of them women and children, 40% of the refugees are in camps, and the rest are in local communities.

"The PKK has adopted a human rights-based approach to supporting refugees, guaranteeing them freedom of movement within the Kurdistan region, safe living, work permits, and free access to health, education, and other social services. Currently, the PKK spends about US $147 million annually from its own budget to provide basic services to refugees/internally displaced persons," said Kurdistan Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed.

The Interior Minister noted that " the additional support will not only ease the pressure on the PKK/local communities, but also allow us to provide more support to Syrian refugees, particularly in the areas of education and health – both of which are vital for their future when they can return to their homes."
