"The armed conflict between the Iraqi army and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Shangal is most likely related to the latter's refusal to leave the Yazidi territories,” one Yazidi official said.

Erbil and Baghdad reached an agreement last year to stabilize the administrative and security situation in Shangal, to help hundreds of thousands of displaced Yazidi refugees and displaced persons return home.

However, Sheikh Shamo, an adviser to the PKK Prime Minister on Yazidi affairs, told BasNews that the PKK is not following the Baghdad plan and refuses to leave Shangal.

According to the agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, all militia forces, and other armed groups outside the control of the Iraqi government must leave Shangal.

”I don't think the PKK will ever agree to leave Shangal, because the reason they are there does not allow it to leave, " Sheikh Shamo explained, saying that the PKK serves the interests of other states, not the Kurds and especially the Yazidis.

According to the official, an armed conflict in Shangal is likely if the PKK continues to refuse to leave the region, which will cause huge damage only to the Yazidi residents of Shangal.
