US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken welcomed the law “On Yazidi Women Survivors " adopted by the Iraqi parliament. Blinken expressed support for Iraq in its efforts to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.

“We welcome the adoption by Iraq of this law, which recognizes the genocide of ISIL against the Yazidis and is aimed at meeting the needs of survivors of unspeakable atrocities. We continue to support the Government of Iraq in our fight to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, " Anthony Blinken said on Twitter.

The Iraqi Parliament, at its 38th meeting, held on March 1, 2021, adopted the law "On surviving Yazidi Women". The bill was introduced by Iraqi President Bahram Salih in 2019.

In March 2019, a group of Yazidi activists, together with the Administration of the President of Iraq, developed a bill to protect the rights of Yazidi women who survived the genocide. The authors want to consolidate the state's obligations to the surviving Yazidis at the legislative level.

It is assumed that the law will oblige the Iraqi authorities to pay the victims a monthly allowance, provide medical care, study in higher educational institutions of the country on a preferential basis, as well as receive housing.

We remind you that on August 3, 2014, ISIL terrorists seized the region of Shangal in northern Iraq, populated mainly by Yazidis, and committed genocide against the local population. Some 5,000 people were killed, up to 7,000 women and children were abducted into slavery, and more than 400,000 Yazidis became refugees.

More than 3,000 Yazidi women and children are still missing.
