Charles Michel: A huge step has been taken in the right direction
I offer the support of the European Union to strengthen all positive efforts on various issues — the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said at a briefing after a meeting of representatives of the authorities and the opposition at the Presidential Palace.
"We had very important meetings with the leaders of the opposition political parties and the Prime Minister of Georgia. We had the opportunity to listen to each other and we learned that there are many issues that politicians need to address. I offer the support of the European Union to strengthen all positive efforts on various issues. In two weeks in Brussels, we will have the next Association Council together with Georgia, where we will find out what progress has been made on various issues. The main message is as follows: the European Union is the defender of the interests of the citizens of Georgia. There are many difficult challenges in this country: economic development, social situation, COVID-19, security, stability. These are very significant challenges that we must deal with. This is the reason why we need to urgently solve the political crisis," said Charles Michel.
According to him, a big step forward was made in the Presidential Palace.
"I'm proud of this evening because it was a huge step in the right direction. That doesn't mean it's all settled. This does not mean that there are no complex issues that political parties and the Government should consider. This means that when I asked all the participants whether they would like to strengthen the political dialogue in order to find a solution together, the answer was clear-yes, which is an important step and we will continue to support all positive efforts," said Charles Michel.
