Opposition parties of Georgia will hold a large-scale protest action in Tbilisi today demanding the release of the chairman of the "United National Movement" Niki Melia and the appointment of new parliamentary elections.

At 13: 00, the participants of the action will gather at the Tbilisi concert hall (Philharmonic hall), from where they will march to the Georgian parliament a couple of kilometers away. From there, the protesters are expected to move to the government administration building and announce their plans.

Opposition supporters from the regions will join the rally. Civil society activists from Telavi and Zugdidi arrived in Tbilisi at dawn today. They set up tents at the parliament, adding to the number of those who have remained on Rustaveli Avenue since the day of Melia detention on February 23.

People from Kutaisi, Gori and other cities are also going to take part in the rally in Tbilisi.

The day before, the leader of the European Georgia party, Gigi Ugulava, said that the rally on February 26 "will become the basis for continuous rallies." According to him, the opposition will use all legal methods, including setting up tents, picketing buildings and arranging "corridors of shame" for government officials.

Nika Melia was arrested on February 23 following a police raid at the central office of the United National Movement. A few hours later, the opposition announced the start of street protests.

Melia detention caused a wide response in the international community. Practically all international organizations and Georgia's Western partners called on the authorities and the opposition to engage in dialogue. Both sides express their readiness to sit down at the negotiating table, but so far this has not happened.
