Director of the National Center for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze at a briefing told about the reasons for the delay in the delivery of Pfizer vaccine to Georgia.

According to him, earlier Georgia received confirmation from the Covax platform at the World Health Organization that the vaccine will be sent to the country at the end of February. However, due to the fact that Pfizer has not yet fulfilled the order of the vaccine for the EU countries, the delivery of the drug to Georgia was postponed.

"Today, Pfizer is one of the largest manufacturers of the vaccine and wants to fulfill its obligations to the EU, so there is a problem with supplies to the 18 countries that receive the vaccine from the Covax platform. So far, Pfizer's vaccine deliveries have been postponed until the end of March. We don't know the exact date yet," Gamkrelidze said.

The chief epidemiologist noted that work is now underway to ensure that the country receives a vaccine from the British company Astrazeneca. According to Gamkrelidze, if the company does not fail, then according to the contract, several hundred thousand doses of this vaccine should be delivered to Georgia in March.

The head of the National Center for Disease Control stressed that the country is doing everything possible to start vaccination in March.

"We really want to vaccinate at least 200,000 people twice before the end of May, and then, starting in June, continue the so — called extended vaccination campaign," Gamkrelidze said.

Gamkrelidze noted that vaccination against coronavirus is now taking place in 98 countries around the world. This process has not started in about 130 countries. The leaders in vaccination are Gibraltar, followed by Israel, the Seychelles, Serbia, the United States, and Malta.
