The leader of the largest opposition party in Georgia, Nika Melia, was detained during a special operation in Tbilisi.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has implemented the decision of the Tbilisi City Court on the detention of Nika Melia, the ministry said in a statement.

The leader of Georgia's largest opposition party, the United National Movement, Nika Melia, was detained during a special operation on Tuesday morning.

"Law enforcement officers warned citizens gathered at the office of the National Movement on the Kakheti Highway in Tbilisi not to interfere with the execution of the court's decision and gave them a reasonable time to do so. Despite repeated warnings of law enforcement officers, those gathered at the party office did not obey the legal demand of the police and resisted the law enforcement officers. Accordingly, to fulfill the obligations imposed on it by the court, the police used proportional force and special means in accordance with the law," the statement reads.

Melia appears in the case of organizing mass riots on June 20, 2019. He refused to pay the re - appointed monetary bail. The prosecutor's office demanded that he be placed in pre-trial detention for the duration of the investigation. On February 17, the court granted the request of the prosecutor's office.

Melia accused the authorities of trying to isolate him from political processes and actually declared disobedience to the court's decision.
