The chairman of the largest opposition party in Georgia, United National Movement, Nika Melia, was detained by the police today and taken out of the office in an armored car, where the politician has been staying since February 17.

The police operation to detain Melia began today at 7: 30 am, when ambulances, two special vehicles with ladders, as well as several hundred police officers arrived at the building. By 9 am, Melia was already detained.

The opposition supporters, who were entrenched in the building, did not resist the police — even at night, Melia himself made such a request to them. However, the passageways between the floors and the entrances to the offices were blocked with furniture. Members of the police special forces who entered the building took out the activists who were there and broke most of the furniture in the office.

According to the Mtavari TV channel, during the operation, security forces took servers and hard drives from the UNM office. Journalists suggest that the police did not have a court permit for such actions.

In the end, about ten commandos in special equipment broke down the door of the office on the third floor, where Melia was and took him out of the building.

In parallel, tear gas was used in the room. However, the politicians and journalists who were in the same room with Melia were not going to resist the police, so the process of detention took just a few minutes.

Employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs left the building and the yard of the UNM office to the shouts of " Slaves! "and" Shame!".

The opposition in Georgia has been demanding early elections for three months and boycotting the work of the parliament of the tenth convocation. 51 members of the opposition refused their mandates, as they consider the elections to be rigged. Currently, in the parliament of 150 deputies, only six opposition members are present at meetings.

In recent days, the Georgian government has been repeatedly called upon to negotiate with the opposition by the US State Department, senior senators, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, as well as parties and individual MEPs.
