Following the US State Department, the political crisis in Georgia was also commented on in the Senate – the statement was distributed by the co-chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Jim Risch and the chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation Gene Shahen.

The senators, who have repeatedly criticized the Georgian authorities for the persecution of political opponents and insisted on the release of detained opposition members, stressed that Georgia has problems with an independent judicial system.

"We are deeply concerned about the recent political developments in Georgia. The people of Georgia deserve the rule of law, democracy, and an honest and independent judiciary. Over the past few years, we have raised the issue of political persecution with Georgian officials many times.

While we are pleased that the detention of opposition leader Nika Melia has been lifted, such political harassment and arrests should never take place.

All sides of the political spectrum must now return to the negotiating table and ensure that the political atmosphere is de-escalated. We hope that this political crisis will be resolved quickly and peacefully, " the senators said in a statement.
