The Tbilisi City Court changed the measure of restraint against the chairman of the United National Movement (UNM) Niki Melia from bail to arrest. Thus, Judge Nino Chakhnashvili granted the request of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Earlier, the leader of the country's largest opposition party refused to pay the bail chosen by the court as a preventive measure, and the parliament, having satisfied the request of the prosecutor's office, removed his parliamentary immunity. After today's court decision, Nika Melia should be arrested.

The politician is currently in the UNM office. Human rights activists and opposition activists say they will not allow him to be detained. Melia also spent the previous night in the party office.

At the office of the opposition party "United National Movement" there were several police officers who came to arrest the leader of the party Nika Melia. They are not allowed to enter the building by representatives and supporters of the opposition. Law enforcement officers read out the court ruling and asked the audience not to interfere with the execution of the decision to detain the UNM leader. "If we encounter resistance, the measures provided for by the law will be taken," the police officer said. The lawyer of the politician Dmitry Sadzaglishvili came out to the law enforcement officers, who asked for a court order, but the police refused them and tried to enter the building. This was prevented by the gathered opposition supporters, after which the police left the territory. "We saw that we were not allowed into the building, the doors were closed. All the measures provided for by the law will be used for execution, " the representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said. He promised that further clarifications would be made soon.

Nika Melia, who became chairman of the UNM at the end of last year, is accused of organizing and directing group violence, as well as participating in it – in the case of the riots on June 20, 2019, also known as "Gavrilov night".
