In Georgia, the program of examination of patients who have suffered from coronavirus is expected to start working from March, Deputy Minister of Health Tamar Gabunia said at a briefing.

According to her, part of the examinations considered by the relevant protocol of the universal health care program will be fully funded by the state, or the patient will have to pay a minimum amount.

"Until the end of February, we think to clarify these details. We are consulting with the clinical team and we think that it will be possible to fully implement this program as early as March. The examinations provided for in this protocol are partially covered within the framework of universal access, so a patient who comes to their doctor at the primary health care level will be able to access those examinations that the doctor believes will be needed, " Gabunia explained.

Within the framework of the program, patients will be divided into two groups. The first group will include those who have suffered from coronavirus in a mild form. In the second - those patients who suffered from coronavirus in a severe form, were treated in intensive care. These groups need different observations and surveys.

The official also said that the drug "remdesivir" purchased by the Ministry of Health was requested in the case of 178 patients, 167 were satisfied. According to Gabunia, the condition of patients who take this drug is satisfactory. In the group of patients who take remdesivir, only two deaths were recorded. The rest of the patients have either finished treatment or remain in the clinic.

Most of the patients taking this drug have already recovered, but whether their recovery is specifically related to taking remdesivir is unknown.

Gabunia noted that the WHO does not recommend the use of remdesivir at this stage, as there is not enough evidence regarding its effectiveness. However, its use in clinical practice is not prohibited.

According to Gabunia, the goal of the Ministry of Health is to ensure that patients in Georgia have access to all the means that give hope for recovery.

"Taking into account the benefits and risks, this group takes medications based on the opinion of clinical experts, and so far the practice is satisfactory," Gabunia said.
