Displaced members of the Yazidi religious minority, now living in the camp located on Mount Sinjar (Shangal), protested against the suspension of assistance to the camp by the Government of Iraq.

The demonstration, which took place in the Sardasht camp, took place against the backdrop of heavy snowfall and low temperatures.

"There are not enough services in our area, our homes are destroyed, so we can't go back, and the government has stopped its aid to the camp. I swear that there are families who can't light the heaters for several days due to lack of fuel. Our children can't sleep at night in the bitter cold. It will be a disaster if the government doesn't solve our problems," said Ilyas Khadr Barakat, who has lived there for more than six years.

The Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement decided during her visit to the camp last year to stop providing assistance to the camp as part of a plan to close all camps for displaced persons, effectively forcing residents to return to their home areas, despite repeatedly stating that they felt unsafe.

The camp's director, Sardasht Ali Shaabo, said: "The government stopped its assistance to the camp's residents more than two months ago, and now they do not consider the people who are still living in the camp to be displaced».

The camp was built in 2014 and includes 2,300 tents. It is currently home to 3,300 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have fled the Islamists.

"These people are unable to return to their areas because of the destruction that occurred while ISIL was in control of the city," Shaabo added.

A local official told media on Thursday that the Iraqi federal government plans to exhume the remains of more than 100 ISIS victims who were killed when the extremist group captured Shangal.
