The Mayor of Shangal, Mahma Khalil, warned that part of the Yazidi vote in the upcoming Iraqi elections could be lost, as the voter registration list has not yet been submitted to Parliament.

Khalil argued that the Yazidis might not send their "true" representatives to the Iraqi parliament if most of the displaced Yazidis were not allowed to vote in the camps.

He also warned that Shangal could face a campaign of Arabization and demographic change.

"They (the Iraqi authorities) allowed the Arabs to vote in Shangal, but they will not allow the displaced Yezidis in the camps to vote for candidates; this means there is no Yezidi representatives who will protect the interests and rights of the Yezidi people, reminding the government about the ethnic cleansing committed by ISIS 2014," — said measures.

In addition to killing hundreds of Yazidis, the jihadists abducted more than 6,000 Yazidis in mid-2014, including women and children, more than half of whom have already been released with the help of intermediaries, humanitarian organizations, and relatives who paid ransoms for their loved ones.

The Mayor of Shangal noted that some of the displaced Yazidis are still unable to return to their homes due to instability in their hometowns and lack of infrastructure.
