The Yazidi people lived from time immemorial on the territory of Shangal, Sinjar of the Nineveh Valley, these lands belonged to them. After the 2014 ISIS attack, the Yazidi people were subjected to ethnic cleansing, towns and villages where the Yazidi minority lived were destroyed. Especially destroyed the Yazidi Shrine (Ziarat). Local Yazidi shrines are still not restored, after their destruction by terrorists, some Yazidis, who make up the majority in the city, nervously look at the Shiite expansion, the construction of new and reconstruction of old mosques.

"First, the Hashd al-Shaabi [Popular Mobilization Forces or PMF] are in Shangal. Secondly, the power is practically in the hands of the Shiites, so the Shiites are sure that they are supported, so they do not have any problems for the mosques built,” Hero Murad, a local Yazidi resident, told Rudaw TV.

The Shiites of Shangal, who are mostly Kurds, they live in the center of the city. There are no official demographic data for this group.

Student Ilyas Haji: "We know that the Shiites are supported by Najaf and Karbala. They are restoring their shrines and thereby changing the demographics of Shangal."

Before ISIS, there were 28 Yazidi shrines in Shangal. Eight of them were blown up and destroyed. So far, none of them have been repaired and restored.

Sheikh Shamo Naamo, who advises the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (PKK) on Yazidi affairs, also claims that the move of Shiites to the area is part of a larger plan for demographic change.

"Now Shiites have come and opened cultural centers in Shangal to spread their culture and traditions and settle more Shiites in the city. These actions represent invasions of our Yazidi land, are the beginning of our disappearance and pose a threat to our identity. Unfortunately, some of our residents are happy with this project, " -He said.

Kurdish Shiites consider Shangal to be religiously significant, citing the fact that a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad passed through this city.
