Employee of the Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yazidis and journalist Yazidis.info gave an interview to the Press club and information and analytical website pressunity.org, regarding the role of Yazidi women in community Affairs. The interview also raised questions about Yazidi women who are fighting againts the ISIS terrorist group. You can read the interview below:

"In a previous interview, we had a chance to talk with David Babayev, an employee of Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yazidis and discuss key issues of preserving the Yazidi identity and community. Today's interview is the fruit of a dialogue with the editor of the information portal of the Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yazidis, Oksana Smoeva Razmikovna. We discussed the role of women both in the Yazidi family and in the issue of saving the people.

To begin with, what duties were traditionally assigned to a woman in a Yazidi family?

As in most peoples, and the Yazidis from time immemorial, it has always been considered and is considered that in the family the man is the head of the family, the well — being of the family is his duty. A woman is a caring mother, a home Keeper, and a member of society. I note that if a woman is not the main one, this does not mean that she does not have any rights. Traditionally, women in Yazidi families have always had a lot of responsibilities. I will say more, I have often heard from the older generation that women who live mainly in rural areas, of which there was a majority, in addition to raising children and farming, were engaged in continuous rural labor from morning to night. I say this without exaggeration. Now, in our time, much has changed, of course, but no one has canceled this traditional duty to keep and protect the home. Because, in my opinion, it is the woman in the family who passes on all spiritual values, culture and traditions to the younger generation.

Today, Yazidi women in the middle East are forced to take up arms and fight Islamists, in particular, there are stories about the fight against Daesh (a banned terrorist organization, best known as ISIL). How has the role of women changed and changed with modernity?

A Yazidi woman has always stood next to a man in defense of her people and homeland during difficult periods of history. I can tell you with accuracy that our people have had many such periods, unfortunately. A little more than 6 years have passed since the latest events, namely the Yazidi genocide in Shangal. I think, as you know, the ISIL terrorist group broke into Shangal, brutally killing thousands of Yazidis, and enslaved Yazidi women and children for further torture. In 2015, women's groups formed the "women's Yazidi people's militia", which later conducted operations to protect the community from terrorists. During these operations, led by this women's militia, hundreds of Yazidis and Yazidis were released. These fragile girls have helped hundreds of girls, women and children return to their loved ones. It seems to me that all this was possible thanks to their self-organization and strength of spirit. Among them were those who personally survived the capture of ISIS. So, Yazidis played a huge role in the struggle for honour and dignity at the time of the Yazidi genocide in 2014. It's not just about these girls who are still fighting against terrorists. I also mean activists, journalists, and human rights activists. They did not remain silent, they told and tell the whole world about the brutal acts of ISIS, trying to somehow convey the problems of the Yazidis to the world. These women are a symbol of the fight against terrorists. You probably know the names of these girls, one of them is Nadia Murad, an activist who personally experienced all the brutal, hellish acts of terrorists.

You live in Georgia and are an employee Of the Yazidi cultural center of the Caucasus. What measures are being taken by the organization to support Yazidi women? Are there any organizations that are interested in cooperation on this issue?

Our organization and website are one of the leading information sources about Yazidis in the Caucasus. (primes'. author — http://yazidis.info) We actively support women and children with information, and we receive numerous calls from all over the world. These are mostly calling solely for the purpose of getting acquainted with the activities of our organization, as young activists and journalists call. Our cultural center also actively cooperates with organizations in Armenia, Russia, and France. We have close contacts with the UN human rights Committee, and our last two reports on human rights were published on the UN website.

Regarding organizations that are interested in supporting Yazidi women, I will answer briefly — there are no such organizations.

In General, I can say that after the Georgian government took measures to ban early marriages, the number of divorces among very young people decreased, and cases when girls were forcibly married off by their parents decreased. So girls now have the right to vote. Of course, I'm sure there are still some exceptions, but they didn't reach our organization».
