US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo arrives in Tbilisi

During the visit, the US Secretary of state is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister, President, foreign Minister of Georgia and Patriarch Ilia II.
US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo will arrive in Tbilisi this afternoon. Mike Pompeo will hold all official meetings on November 18. The Secretary of state is scheduled to meet with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

Mike Pompeo will also meet with Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II in Tbilisi. At the same time, the Secretary of state will also meet with representatives of the civil sector.

According to the Georgian foreign Ministry, during the high-level meetings scheduled during the Secretary of state's visit to Georgia, the priorities and prospects for further deepening of the existing strong cooperation between the two countries in the fields of defense and security, trade and economy, democracy, people-to-people contacts, education and cultural exchange proposed by the Charter of strategic partnership of the United States and Georgia will be discussed.

During the meetings planned during the visit, the parties will discuss the current security situation in Georgia and the region, as well as cooperation between the countries in order to strengthen regional and international security. The parties will also discuss the ongoing democratic and economic reforms in Georgia.

"The visit of the US Secretary of state to Georgia once again underlines the firmness of the existing strategic partnership between the US and Georgia and the readiness of the countries to strengthen cooperation in order to further strengthen the partnership based on common values and vision. The visit will once again confirm the unwavering support of the United States for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, as well as for the further democratic development and European and Euro – Atlantic integration of our country," the information reads.

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the United States of America were established in 1992.

In 2009, the two countries signed the Charter of strategic partnership, which established the U.S.-Georgia Commission on strategic partnership. The Commission is divided into four bilateral working groups on priority areas defined in the Charter: democracy, defense and security, economic issues, and cultural exchange. Every year, senior American and Georgian politicians hold meetings on each working group, sum up the results and set new tasks.
