Georgia's foreign trade: exports and imports continue to fall

Foreign trade turnover since the beginning of 2020 has decreased by 15% compared to January-October last year and amounted to $ 9.2 billion.

Trade in Georgia against the background of the pandemic continues to fall – Georgian products from January to October 2020 were exported in the amount of $ 2.7 billion – 11.1% less compared to the same period in 2019, according to the national statistics service of the country "Sakstat".

Imports since the beginning of 2020 amounted to more than $ 6.4 billion, which is 16.6% less than in January-October 2019.

Foreign trade turnover since the beginning of 2020 decreased by 15% compared to January-October last year and amounted to $ 9.2 billion (excluding unorganized trade).

The rate of decline is decreasing

The rate of decline began to decline in June - Georgia's foreign trade turnover fell by 16%, including exports – by 13.1%, and imports-by 17.2%. While in may of this year, Georgia's foreign trade turnover fell by 33.2%, including exports – by 30.6%, and imports-by 34.3%.

At the same time, in September, exports increased by 8.6% and amounted to $ 332 million, while the deficit improved by $ 98.5 million. Economy Minister Natia Turnava, commenting on the September data, said that the Georgian economy is gradually returning to positive development.

According to the head of the Ministry of economy, a special contribution to the growth of exports belongs to agricultural and textile products.

The coronavirus outbreak has dealt a serious blow to the country's entire economy. Losses are incurred by hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, recreation and entertainment, transport. The financial, construction, real estate, manufacturing, and education sectors are also under threat.
