MEPs Andrius Kubilius, Rasa Jukneviciene and Sigismund Pavilionis issue a joint statement on developments in Georgia after the parliamentary elections.

According to the statement, they have always been unwavering supporters of Georgia, its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"We are concerned about the situation after the October parliamentary elections. Despite the fact that the elections were competitive and voters had a real alternative, the conduct of the elections was affected by widespread accusations of pressure on voters, which caused a decrease in public confidence.

The situation is aggravated by the information that the opposition and non-governmental organizations were actually denied the opportunity to fairly consider justified claims and appeal to existing institutions. Fair and transparent handling of any complaints remains a prerequisite for establishing trust between Georgian politicians and people.

The government of Georgia, together with the ruling party, is responsible for responding to existing problems and reaching a dialogue with the opposition in order to find a quick way out of the difficult situation for Georgian democracy," the MEPs said in a statement.

They call on international organizations to assess complaints and violations and provide final conclusions.

"We once again call for a credible and inclusive legal process to address election violations to ensure that the will of the electorate is respected.

We call on international organizations that observed the first round of elections (especially the OSCE / ODIHR and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) to assess complaints and evidence of violations and provide final conclusions," the statement reads.

The MEPs Express their readiness to play a constructive role in the dialogue between the government, the opposition and the people.

"We believe that the Georgian authorities use legal means within the framework of the democratic processes that Georgia has built over the past decades to assess complaints and evidence related to election violations and to conduct an inclusive dialogue with the opposition and people protesting in the streets.

We are ready to help and play a constructive role in this dialogue. We call on the Georgian authorities to limit the use of police force against peaceful demonstrators and not to provoke violence in the streets.

Against the background of events in the South Caucasus region, Georgia needs political stability and unity to implement an ambitious European agenda. Accordingly, we once again call on all political parties to immediately take responsibility for ensuring that Georgia concentrates its efforts for European integration and has a Parliament with broad legitimacy and coping with challenges, " the statement reads.
