Hundreds of internally displaced Yazidis gathered at the Shaariya camp in Duhok to protest the presence of the Kurdistan Workers ' party (PKK) in Shangal.

About 400 people took part in a protest in the Shangal Sharaf al-Din, a sanctuary for the Yazidi community that calls the area home.

"Shangal has endured so much suffering and adversity that we want peace and security to be ensured,” said Khalaf Hadi, mayor of Kolka village in the Shangal district of Nineveh province.

At least 3 other protests were held in various camps around Duhok province, where most of the Yazidis displaced from Shangal live.

Protesters held up placards calling on the PKK to stop recruiting Yazidi children to participate in military conflicts.

During the demonstration, they expressed their readiness to return to their homes, provided that the PKK and other illegal forces leave the region and stop their destabilizing missions.

They also welcomed the Erbil-Baghdad agreement on Shangal, hoping that it would be fully implemented and ensure the safe return of hundreds of thousands of Yazidis who are still displaced years after their hometowns were liberated.
