New COVID-19 restrictions come into force in Georgia-list

Starting today, a number of additional restrictions are being introduced in seven major cities of Georgia to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The prohibition movement

From November 9, traffic and pedestrians will be restricted in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Rustavi, Zugdidi, Gori, Poti at night – from 22:00 to 05:00.

This restriction does not apply to:

international freight transport;

Individuals and vehicles whose movement is critical to the performance of official duties, including representatives of medical and pharmaceutical services, strategic facilities and the media, as well as delivery couriers. However, they will first need to coordinate this with the operational headquarters.

The Georgian government insists that such a measure is another point restriction, not a curfew.

New work schedule

With the exception of medical, pharmaceutical and strategic facilities, absolutely all organizations will be open until 22: 00.

Kindergarten

All kindergartens, both public and private, will be closed indefinitely from November 9 in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Rustavi, Zugdidi, Gori and Poti.

Public transport

In Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Rustavi, Zugdidi, Gori and Poti, restrictions are imposed on the number of passengers in buses and minibuses. As previously explained by Deputy Prime Minister, head of the Ministry of regional development of Georgia Maya Tskitishvili, public transport will be banned from transporting people standing up.

The epidemiological situation in Georgia began to worsen in early autumn. On September 10, Prime Minister George Gakharia announced the beginning of the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic. He assured that the authorities are fully controlling the situation with the spread. At that time, a record number of infected people in 24 hours was detected in the country — 57 people.

On November 4, the daily increase in cases exceeded 2 thousand. On November 8, it was 2,901, and the total number of infected was 57,753. Currently, 14,680 COVID-19 cases remain active.

It was only after the October 31 parliamentary elections that the authorities decided to start introducing new restrictions.

In particular, since November 4, the wearing of masks has become mandatory both in closed spaces and on the street. Until November 25, in all major cities of the country, the educational process is conducted remotely. In addition, restaurants and entertainment facilities throughout Georgia are prohibited from working at night-after 22 hours.
