Natia Turnava hastened to assure that the government is not going to apply strict restrictions and will not close the business, despite the increase in the number of infected people, so that lari can strengthen.

The lari exchange rate was affected by negative expectations that arose in the economy, business and among the population due to the increase in the number of infected people in Georgia, Minister of economy and sustainable development Natia Turnava said during a speech in Parliament on Friday.

The epidemiological situation in Georgia began to deteriorate markedly in the fall. The number of infected people from February 26 to today has already exceeded the mark of three thousand people. However, during the week, the national currency exchange rate against the dollar fell by 3.1% to 3,214 GEL/$1.

"The lari exchange rate was certainly affected by the negative expectations that arose in the economy, business and the population due to the increase in the number of infected people, but I want to say once again that we will not apply strict restrictions and will not close businesses. We will support the economy. Slowly, with a careful approach, we will open the borders. We think that this will stabilize expectations, stabilize the exchange rate of the lari, " Turnava said.

The head of the Ministry of economy noted that both the population and the government are concerned about the fluctuation of the lari exchange rate. But the Georgian economy is showing signs of recovery, which gives confidence that negative factors will gradually be removed from the agenda.

"But I also want to make it clear that we are facing a big problem. Tourism has stopped altogether for some time, and now we are gradually resuming flights and international visits. Tourism plays an important role in the flow of foreign currency to the country. The same thing happened with trade due to the difficult situation in foreign markets. Now the export of Georgian products is starting to grow slowly, and this is a good sign, " Turnava said.
