More than 800 Yazidi families have left the camp on mount Shangal in the past few weeks and returned to their homes in Shangal, the Deputy Governor of Nineveh province said.

Ali Omar told BasNews that the number of Yazidi families voluntarily returning to Shangal is growing, despite security problems and the lack of public services in the city, which the Iraqi government has promised to address.

The Sardasht camp, located on mount Shangal, was one of the first places where thousands of Yazidis fled after their city was captured by the Islamic state back in 2014.

Omar said the camp is expected to be fully liberated by the end of this year, after which the government will officially close it.

He explained that the Iraqi government had promised to rebuild the city, improve security and provide financial assistance to families who would return to their homes in Shangal; however, these promises had not yet been fulfilled.
