Yazda Supports Public Engagement Activities for Revitalizing the Yazidi Minority at Tel Banat Complex
The Yazda team in Sinjar provided logistical support to the Evolution of Society volunteer group; this volunteer group worked with the Tel-banat Youth Center to remove signs of ISIS from the neighboring areas of the Tel-banat complex. The symbols and figures were dyed and painted, therefore restoring the complex to its previous beauty.
According to the Yazda team, since the onset of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, 207 yazidis families have returned to the Tel-banat complex. These families are preparing to restart their lives, 6 years after the beginning of the genocide. Many other families are planning to return in the upcoming period; these families are in need of humanitarian and relief assistance, in order to meet their daily needs. These families strongly believe that their new lease on life will begin with the removal of the devastation caused by ISIS.
Before erasing them, the Yazda Documentation team has recorded the symbols and devastation caused in Tel-banat since 2017. This is to not only preserve all pieces of evidence that showcase ISIS’ crimes against the Yazidi community but to use them for future investigations.
These community engagement activities are part of “Supporting the return of the IDPs in the Nineveh and Western Nineveh”, a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). During the course of this project, Yazda has supported 6 volunteer groups in Sinjar, which have assisted families in returning to their homes.
