Life of Yazidis in Armenia

(Short ethnographic essays on the life and life of Yazidis in Armenia)

The village of Galto is home to approximately 15 Yazidi families. A resident of the village of Titale Jaso told us:

"The village is far from the main road, there are almost no roads in the village itself. There are 2 castes in Galto-the lay and PIR caste, there are no sheikhs in the village. If there is a festive event or funeral in this area, then the villagers invite the Sheikh from the neighboring village.

Since the village is far from the highway, if necessary, an ambulance

sometimes it takes less than 20 minutes to get there, and in most cases the villagers themselves take the patients to the hospital.

In the village, almost everyone is engaged in animal husbandry, grazing cows and sheep. But this work is not appreciated because the villagers hand over milk and meat for a pittance. This makes animal husbandry not profitable, and many simply go abroad because of this.

Young people do not have proper access to education, because any training is paid and very expensive. But there are exceptions: children from well-off families go to higher educational institutions. Even if a person gets a higher education, what will they do in the village? We need agronomists and veterinarians; they are now almost non-existent. Young people are leaving for Russia. In addition to the lack of roads, we also do not have gas, and never have, we fill up with cylinders"- complains about the situation Titale Jaso.
