The European Bank for reconstruction and development (EBRD) will allocate 90 million euros for the construction of a new 150-kilometer power transmission network and other energy infrastructure in Georgia, the press service of the Ministry of economy and sustainable development reports.

The agreement was signed by Georgian Finance Minister Ivane Machavariani and EBRD regional Director for the Caucasus Katarina Bjorlin Hansen.

The funds allocated by the EBRD will be spent on the construction of the Nenskra — Mestia power line in Svaneti, the nenskra 500/220/35 kV substation, the 500 kV Lajanuri — Tskaltubo power line and the 220 kV Tskaltubo — Namakhvani — Tvishi — Lajanuri power line.

The Georgian energy network development project will help strengthen the country's energy system, and strengthen energy independence and energy security. The project will be implemented by JSC "Georgian state electric system". The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.

"Developed generation needs the same developed transmission networks and network infrastructure. The EBRD has allocated a financial resource of 90 million euros for the construction of a new 150-kilometer transmission network in Georgia to strengthen the relevant substations, and in General our energy system and our energy independence," said Natia Turnava, head of the Ministry of economy.

The construction of new hydroelectric power plants is a priority of the government of Georgia, as according to forecasts, in 10 years the country may face a serious energy deficit due to steadily growing electricity consumption. According to forecasts, this figure will reach 22 billion KWh by 2030.

The Minister noted that over the past eight years, up to 40 new small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants with a total installed capacity of 654 MW have been commissioned.

At the same time, analysts consider it an important event to resume the work of the largest hydroelectric power station in Georgia for the past 30 years, the Shuakhevi HPP, in February 2020. The installed capacity of the Shuakhevi HPP is 187 MW, and the annual electricity generation is 450 million KW/h.

The Shuakhevi HPP cascade is the largest and most important project in the history of independent Georgia. As part of the project, two dams and two reservoirs were built on the territory of the shuakhevo municipality of Adjara on the Adjaristskali river.

Turnava said that already began the process of building a "Namakhvani HPP" and "HPP Nestra". In addition, two thermal power plants equipped with the latest technologies have been commissioned in Gardabani.

"In the energy sector, our main task is to develop our own energy resources and strengthen our country's energy independence," Turnava said.
