Life of Yazidis in Armenia

(Short ethnographic essays on the life and life of Yazidis in Armenia)

The village of Mirak is in the Aragatsotn region of the Republic of Armenia. The population consists of 15 families, including 1 Armenian family the other Yazidis. According to Mais Mamadyan, the village of Mirak was founded more than a century ago. At one time, the village had 175 families.

According to Mais Mamadyan, this is the only Yezidi village in this region from which he emigrated, almost all the population. In the village, compared to other villages in the region, the social situation is very difficult. According to Mais, the reason is a new generation that does not want to earn hard physical labour, does not want to engage in animal husbandry or tillage. Most make a preference to just leave. There were families who emigrated to Russia, to Russian villages, and there are engaged in animal husbandry and soil cultivation, arguing that this business is more profitable than in Armenia. Mais Mamadyan also noted the problems of everyday life, the condition of roads in the village and to the Central highway, the distance of which is 2.5 kilometres, to the nearest city is eight kilometres. Often there are problems with the arrival of fire engines and ambulances, there is no gas supply, which leads to a problem with heating in the winter, there is no public transport, there is no grocery store, street lighting at night. Because of this, stray wild animals often enter the village, causing harm to residents.

Mais Mamadyan : " It is unlikely that These problems will ever be solved, since the administration will not go to the expense of such a small village as ours. Such problems are also present in large villages, and as I understand it, they have priority. As for education, everything is not so bad, in addition to the school curriculum, children learn their native language. After all, this possibility is not available in all Yazidi villages. The school has 15 students.”

After graduation, few people continue their studies. There are many reasons, one of them is the financial situation, and the second reason is the current generation, which is sceptical about studying.

Regarding the preservation of the religion and traditions of our people, I can say that everything is fine with this, because no one and nothing prevents us from observing religion and traditions.

“We live in the modern world, in the era of high technology and, in my opinion, this progress plays in our favour, since the global network allows for virtual communication, expression of opinions, access to information, and its dissemination. Great information peoples know about us, about our religion, our traditions with the help of Internet resources," says Mais Ramadan.

According to him, many people know about the village, thanks to "Ziarat Mala Jn Tayar" - the Shrine is in the house of the deceased Shikoe Shekh. His current receiver Rostik Shekh. According to him, many people were cured of phobias and various diseases, including people of other Nations in this Ziaret (Shrine). People believe, come with the hope of healing, and achieve their goal.

Yazidis passing by the sanctuary, as a sign of faith tilted his head and hold a hand over my face, said Mais Ramadan.
