Yazidi regions have been witnessing, for nearly three months, the return of the displaced to their homes after nearly six years of displacement in the Kurdistan region, families have returned to most of the compounds and villages since last June.

The Gerzark complex, which was first attacked by ISIS in the morning of Sunday, August 3, 2014, and its sons confronted the organization for long hours until the munitions were carried out while the ISIS was getting supplies from the neighboring Arab villages, and the terrorists broke the front barrier and killed who remained fighting against the volunteers from the compound and kidnapped those who could not reach the mountain, most of them women and children.

The members of the ISIS terrorists kidnapped more than 130 individuals from the compound, after controlling the area for hours. Nearly 25 volunteers who fought the them in the same morning 6 persons, elderly and children, were killed inside the compound as a result of throwing and indiscriminate shelling of civilians, according to survivors of the region.

On the reason why the people of the compound did not return, “Dakhil Sabri” spoke to “Ezidi 24” and said, “The reason the people did not return to the compound is the destruction left by the war with ISIS, and the complex remains insecure due to the military waste, explosives and booby-trapped homes.”

He added, “The damage caused to the houses due to the natural factors of the climate from heavy rains and floods also impedes the return of the people, which led to the destruction of many mud houses, especially since this village included people who are poor in material terms.”

The Gerzark complex, which is called (Adnania) in Arabic, which is affiliated to the Telazir district (Al-Qahtaniya), is administratively attached to the Ba’aj district, west of Nineveh Governorate, which has a Yazidi majority, and has had about 700 families of Yazidis and Muslims, since 1973 after the forcible transfer of the former Baathist regime of Yazidis from mountain villages Surrounding Mount Shingal.

“Sabri” indicated that “the people of Gerzak are suffering from poverty, and therefore they cannot build their destroyed homes, which are not suitable for restoration, but must be rebuilt again, which is another reason for not returning, not to mention the security situation and the geographical location.”

Noting that “the solutions to the problem of the return of the villagers to it are to compensate the people financially for rebuilding their homes and to survey the village by military engineering and international organizations specialized in raising the military waste, in addition to a government effort in terms of service and security.”

“Ali Mirza”, one of those who fought ISIS on the 3rd of August 2014 in the Gerzark complex, told “Ezidi 24,” after we fulfilled our duty and faced the terrorists on the morning of August 3, 2014, and we were able to protect the complex for long hours and killed a large number of them and burned their wheels, ISIS members, after controlling the compound, booby-trapped the compound indiscriminately and intensively, and also because of the shelling and the battles that took place between us and ISIS, all the reasons for damaging the houses and the complex in general.

It is mentioned that after ISIS took control of the complex for three years, it was liberated on May 30, 2017, and the popular crowd was able to recover the compound after violent battles with the terrorists.

After the liberation, the Military Engineering Division announced the difficulty of cleaning the complex, and confirmed that the ISIS booby-trapped a large number of houses, and on 7/12/2019 the security forces announced the killing of an officer and two soldiers as a result of the explosion of a house they tried to dismantle.

“Mirza” pointed out that “it is difficult for us to return to the complex due to the military waste, explosive devices, and homes that are destroyed and most of them are destroyed or severely damaged. The complex needs a great effort from the government and private organizations to raise the remnants of war, and the government should compensate the people because it is a strong motivation for the families to return to the complex.” And start their lives again. “
