The European Union has provided the Ministry of internal Affairs (MVD) with first-line document verification equipment to support the government of Georgia in the fight against illegal migration and cross-border crime.

At an event at Tbilisi airport, the EU and the international organization for migration (IOM) handed over 60 pieces of state-of-the-art border control equipment to the Ministry of internal Affairs, including document verification equipment, which allows passport control officers at key border crossings in Georgia to quickly check the security elements of passports and other travel documents. In case of doubt, they can direct passengers to a more thorough inspection and check the second row.

Equipment manufactured in the United Kingdom is a document verification tool with three functions. It is equipped with an ultraviolet lamp installed above the work area to check the UV protection elements, a white lamp installed behind the scattering window to check the transmission functions, and a halogen lamp installed at the back of the work area to inspect dry stamps and indented or erased inscriptions.

The equipment was transferred as part of an EU-funded support program, which includes the provision of 10 million euros (34 million lari) worth of equipment to the Georgian authorities for use in the areas of migration and border management. In recent years, with EU support, the interior Ministry's second-line verification capabilities have been improved, and all major border checkpoints in Georgia are equipped with modern equipment that allows officials to verify the authenticity of travel documents and take adequate measures in case of fraud.
