Investors of small and medium-sized HPPs will receive an additional $ 0.015 from the state for each kWh of electricity sold.

For the development of small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants, the government of Georgia has approved a new mechanism for supporting renewable energy sources, which will help maximize the use of hydro resources and the development of" green energy", said the head of the Ministry of economy Natia Turnava.

According to the head of the Ministry of economy, there were long discussions about how the state should show support to those investors who want to develop small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants.

As part of the energy reform, the authorities have established an energy exchange where hourly trading will be carried out. Based on the results of the creation of this exchange, a rule was introduced, according to which those who want to invest in small and medium-sized HPPs will trade on this exchange, and together with the income received here, they will receive an additional $ 0.015 from the state for each kilowatt-hour of electricity sold.

"Such mechanisms that will attract more investment in the industry should be offered to investors. This is partly a mechanism based on market principles, although there is support from the state, which ensures that risks associated with changes in market prices are neutralized," Turnava told reporters.

Turnava noted that this is a European practice that will make investments in the energy sector more attractive. Noting that energy is one of the most important sectors that ensures economic and energy independence.

Energy security is a priority

Experts believe that in 10 years Georgia may face a serious energy deficit. According to forecasts, electricity consumption in the country will reach 22 billion KWh by 2030.

Therefore, the construction of as many hydroelectric power stations as possible is a priority of the government of Georgia. After all, it is impossible to fully rely on alternative energy sources. Wind farms cannot 100% replace hydropower. In these stations there are problems associated with stability and power generation.

According to the Ministry of economy, 13 new energy projects are planned to start in the country this year, including the construction of eight hydroelectric power stations, and 14 new HPPs will be commissioned.
