Investments from the US increased by 34% in the first quarter of 2020, and the US became the second largest investor in Georgia with a 17% share. Georgian economy Minister Natia Turnava said this today after a meeting with us Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan.

"We will do everything to make US companies feel even more comfortable in Georgia. The doors of our Ministry are always open for them, so that we will go through all the problems and questions that may arise before them, solve everything so that we have more American investments in the future, " Turnava said.

"It is very encouraging that foreign direct investment from the US increased in the first quarter of 2020, despite the global pandemic. This is another confirmation that we, the Georgian dream team, are creating an investment environment that is attractive to investors, "Turnava stressed.

Turnava and Degnan discussed trade and economic relations between the countries. They also noted that two meetings were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and expressed hope that they would take place in the future.

One of the postponed meetings was the meeting of the Charter Commission's working group on economy, trade and energy, which was scheduled for may 18, 2020, and the other was the visit of the us trade representative's mission to Georgia, scheduled for June 2020.

In addition, Turnava and Degnan discussed the so-called high-level trade and investment dialogue meeting, which was also planned to be held.

At the meeting, Turnava said that Georgia is ready to actively participate in the initiative of the economic prosperity Network, announced by the US President this spring.

"This network will contribute to further deepening economic cooperation, which includes restoring the global economy in the areas of digital business, energy, infrastructure, trade, education or research ... this will include representatives of private companies and civil society from different countries," the Ministry of economy notes.

Tunava also informed Degnan about a package of legislative changes in terms of working conditions and rights, which includes a draft law on labor inspection and the establishment of an independent labor inspection service in Georgia.
