Subsidies this year will probably be provided only for the "Rkatsiteli" grape variety, the head of the wine Agency believes

According to the government's decision, 60 million lari (just under $ 20 million) will be spent on subsidizing the grape harvest (rtveli) this year, said Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National wine Agency.

Against the background of the coronavirus pandemic and the decline in trade operations between the countries, the volume of wine exports from Georgia began to decline. According to the data of "Sakstat", in the first five months of this year, wine exports fell by 11.3% to 73 million dollars.

According to Mekhuzla, the subsidy will probably apply only to the grapes of "Rkatsiteli".

"The main part of exports is red wine, and we probably won't need to interfere in this direction. We very much hope that the Saperavi variety will be sold on the free market. Also, rare grape varieties that are more or less popular and in demand will not be subsidized. One thing can be said that a subsidy will be needed for the Rkatsiteli variety, " Mekhuzla said on channel One.

According to him, the state winery "Akura"will be responsible for the excess of grapes, if necessary. It will accept the remaining products.

He also noted that the main task for today is to ensure the delivery and use of all the grapes.

The grape harvest season takes place in Georgia in autumn. But to prevent the pandemic and economic crisis from affecting rtveli, the Georgian authorities decided to take care of the wine industry as part of the anti-crisis plan. This decision was made during a working meeting of Gakhariya with representatives of the Ministry of agriculture and relevant departments in the first days of June.

For several years, the state has not subsidized the production of wine and the delivery of grapes to wineries. The purchase price for grapes was determined by the market, that is, farmers and wine companies directly agreed on the cost.
