In Geneva, during the 43rd session, the UN human rights Council adopted a resolution on the occupied territories of Georgia entitled: «cooperation with Georgia».

According to the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Georgia, the resolution of the human rights Council once again confirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders. The document recognizes the efforts of the government of Georgia to strengthen democracy, the rule of law and human rights in the country. At the same time, the Council welcomes the cooperation of the government of Georgia with the office of the United Nations high Commissioner for human rights and other regional or international mechanisms in the field of human rights protection.

In the resolution, the human rights Council expresses serious concern at the resumption in the Abkhazian and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia of various forms of discrimination against the ethnic Georgian population, violations of the right to life, deprivation of liberty, illegal detentions and kidnappings, violations of property rights and the right to health, education in their native language and targeted destruction of the property of internally displaced persons.

The resolution expresses serious concern about the lengthy process of erecting wire fences and other artificial barriers along the occupation line and beyond, and emphasizes that the human rights situation in both regions has deteriorated particularly with the introduction of increasing restrictions on the right to freedom of movement.

The resolution also refers to the negative consequences of closing the so-called" crossings " for residents of the Abkhazian and Tskhinvali regions, which further aggravates the existing social and economic situation there and the isolation of the population.

The resolution also expressed concern that regional and international monitoring mechanisms are not allowed in the Abkhazian and Tskhinvali regions.

The UN high Commissioner for human rights is requested by the human rights Council to submit oral and written reports on the issues reflected in the resolution at the next 44th and 45th sessions of the Council.

Georgia's resolution was presented by Lasha Darsalia, Deputy foreign Minister of Georgia, in a video message at a meeting of the UN human rights Council.

According to the Ministry, it is noteworthy that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 43rd session of the UN human rights Council was interrupted on March 13 and resumed on June 15 after a three-month forced pause. Accordingly, the consideration of the proposed agenda resolutions took place on 22 June instead of 20 March.
