In the UK, they found a drug that helps treat patients with coronavirus in the middle and severe stages

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the world health organization, called the results of clinical trials in the UK of the steroid dexamethasone for the treatment of COVID-19 a "scientific breakthrough".

On Tuesday, the UK government approved dexamethasone for the treatment of COVID-19 and called it the world's first drug for coronavirus. An Oxford study found that an anti-inflammatory drug known for more than 60 years reduces the risk of death for patients with COVID-19 connected to ventilators by 35%, and among those on oxygen treatment – by 20%. A package of the drug in Britain costs only about five pounds (6.3 dollars-ed.).

"This is the first drug that has shown a reduction in the death rate among patients with COVID-19 who need oxygen treatment or artificial ventilation," the organization quoted the CEO as saying.

The who said that the UK has provided the organization with preliminary results of the study and expressed hope for a full analysis of the data as soon as possible.

In turn, Egypt said that it used dexamethasone to treat symptoms of the coronavirus with positive results even before the UK announced the registration of the drug.

"The UK has succeeded in spreading this medicine through the media, although Egypt used it before it," said Hussam Hosni, head of the Egyptian Scientific Committee for the fight against coronavirus, on Sada el-Balad TV. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

At the same time, he stressed that the drug can be used exclusively in hospitals and under the supervision of doctors.
