The younger generation should come to politics, but under the current system, all channels are blocked, the Prime Minister believes.

For me, it is extremely important that the political elite change and this is served by the transition to proportional elections, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said on channel One.

According to the Georgian Constitution, the parliamentary elections in 2024 will be a fully proportional system, but the choice of 2020 – in the mixed. However, a new version of amendments to the Constitution is currently being considered, according to which 120 deputies will be elected according to the proportional system instead of 78, while the passage barrier for parties will be only 1%.

"The younger generation and new forces should come to politics, and today the political channels are so blocked that it is impossible," Gahariya said.

At the same time, he noted that he is surprised that young people do not want to engage in politics.

"My biggest surprise was that well-educated, talented young people do not want to go into politics and do not want to start a party life. Everyone goes to their own space and to the private sector. This party system is so discredited that young people cannot get into politics through party channels, " Gahariya said.

Georgia has a parliamentary democracy, which means that the party system is the only correct way to get a person into politics, the Prime Minister added, noting that the middle class of society is gradually becoming interested in politics and social life, and this will increase.

"For our political process, the electoral system, apolitical state officials and timely actions of state institutions are important to strengthen the economy, to form a strong middle class," Gahariya said.

He expressed confidence that the 2020 Parliament will be more professional, effective and will become a platform for significant debates of Georgia's political forces.

"I think from the point of view of representation, the new Parliament will be better than now," said Gajaria.

Today, there are two main political forces in Georgia - the ruling party " Georgian dream-democratic Georgia "and the former ruling force"United national movement". In addition, there are several dozen parties in the country with different ideologies and different views, which have their own supporters in society.
