Life of Yazidis in Armenia

(Short ethnographic essays on the life and life of Yazidis in Armenia)

The village of Tlik is located in the Aragatsotn province of the Republic of Armenia. The village is home to 16 Yazidi families.

According to a resident of the village, Alik Mstoyan, the village of Tlik was founded more than two centuries ago. At one time, the village had more than 120 families. Tlik is one of those Yazidi villages in this area where migration has become a big problem, followed by a large number of other problems and difficulties.

In the village, the social status is average, exactly the same as in other Yazidi villages in this area. People earn their living by farming livestock.

There is a school in the village, where students study up to the fifth grade. In addition to the school curriculum, children learn their native Yazidi language. After finishing school in the village, few people continue their studies for secondary or higher education. Previously, there was a different picture, the village was famous for a large number of graduates who received higher education and worked in their specialty.

For example, Alik's father Mstoyan worked as an accountant in a number of villages in the same region, during the USSR.

The main problem of the village is the lack of drinking water, which makes life in the village very depressing. This problem has been present for decades. The population has to buy drinking water, which is brought by tank. Technical water is taken from the Akhuryan (Arpachay) reservoir (located on the Armenian-Turkish border). Every day you have to travel long distances to transport process water.

The next problem: this is total unemployment among young people. Difficult roads in the village. Lack of gas supply. Lack of agricultural machinery.

Alik Mstoyan: "The preservation of religion plays an important role in our daily life, we take care of our culture, customs and traditions. From generation to generation, we adhere to our faith. Faith in God sustains us in this world. I believe that our culture, customs and traditions are a symbol of commitment to strengthening unity.
