Life of Yazidis in Armenia

(Short ethnogaphic essays on the life and life of Yazidis in Armenia)

The site begins a series of short introductory articles about the life and lifestyle of the Yazidi community in Armenia. The editors of the site hope that this will attract the attention of ethnographers, scientists, and historians who will study the culture and traditions of the Yazidi people in the Caucasus more deeply.

The Director of Cultural centre of the Caucasus Yezidis, Yuri Smoev

Our research group visited the village of Amre Taza, which is located in the Aragatsotn region of the Republic of Armenia. Local resident of Jasme Rashid Murazyan kindly agreed to tell about the life of Yazidis in the village. According to Jasme Rashid Murazyan, 48 families live in sderevne, including 1 family of Sheikhs, 1 family of Pirs, 41 families of Mrids and 5 Armenian families .

According to Jasm Murazyan, the village of Amre Taza was founded more than a century ago, on the slope of mount Aragats, the highest mountain in Armenia. Previously, this village was called Karavansaray. In 1924, great-grandfather Jasm Murazyan named Mraz and six brothers went down to the foot of the mountain and founded the village of Amre Taza, which means new life in Yazidi.

The village of Amre Taza, like most other Yazidi villages, is mainly engaged in animal husbandry and soil cultivation.

The Gyumri-Yerevan road passes through the village of Amre Taza, which makes it possible to trade local products directly in the village. In the village, Armenians and Yazidis coexist peacefully and in harmony. There are even Armenians, who speak the English language, conduct world events concerning the Yezidi people. Jasm Murazyan notes that Yazidi children have the opportunity to learn Yazidi at school, and this gives hope for the preservation of their native Yazidi language.

There are young people in the village who have entered Universities and colleges, which gives hope that in the future all these young Yazidis will master the necessary professions.
