The government's task is to provide maximum assistance to the population in conditions of limited economic opportunities, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said in an interview with Imedi TV.

The Prime Minister stressed that at the moment it is not known when the crisis caused by the pandemic will end, and his team, "like any responsible government, has a plan for how and who to help with existing resources and how to prepare for the worst possible scenario."

"We all need to understand that the possibilities of our economy are limited. Today, the team and the government have a great responsibility to make the most of our small opportunities. Our task is to use the resource that the Georgian economy generates during the crisis to help our citizens, economy and business," Gakharia said.

Speaking about threats to the tourism sector, the Prime Minister noted that despite the measures taken by the government to help, it is clear that this is not enough.

"We already understand today that what we spent before will not be enough, and with such help, this sector will not recover in three months," Gakhariya said.

The Prime Minister also commented on the government's decision to pay for utilities in March, April and may for citizens who use less than 200 kilowatts of electricity and less than 200 cubic meters of gas during the month.

"This was the most correct step of social support. I understand that errors are unavoidable in this case, but even now we are negotiating so that better-off people can opt out of this benefit in favor of the poorer ones," Gakhariya said.

The Prime Minister explained that all those who have already paid for gas and light bills in March, the compensation allocated by the state will be credited to the account in the form of an advance.

Speaking about those who lost their jobs due to the introduction of emergency powers and restrictions on economic activity, Gakhariya again said that the authorities will have to identify those who were left without work during the crisis. According to him, specific assistance will be provided only after the final drawing up of such lists and establishing the budget possibilities.

"We are working on assistance, and it will be as soon as the economy has the opportunity and when we have the data. When we adjust the budget, sources, lists of people, we will see how much income tax has been reduced and who exactly lost their jobs, " explained Gakhariya.
