UN secretary-general's health adviser Giorgi Pkhakadze calls on the georgian government not only not to relax the current restrictions on covid-19, but to tighten them and introduce a full lockdown in the country during the new year holidays.

"The virus does not know Saturdays and Sundays or Christmas and new year. therefore, the only way out for Georgia, unfortunately, i must talk about it, is a complete lockdown, " Pkhakadze said on the pirveli tv channel.

He is confident that Georgia would have been able to avoid the rapid increase in the incidence of COVID-19, if in September the country had introduced not point restrictions, but a nationwide lockdown.

Pkhakadze pointed out that today in Georgia no one seriously thinks about the third wave, and all short-term decisions are made impulsively.

"imagine that you have five windows in your room and the heating is turned on. you close three windows, but two are still open. the heat is still going away. that's the logic. either we close everything, or everything is open, " pkhakadze said.

According to the government's plan, most of the restrictions will be lifted from December 24 to January 2. Epidemiologists have opposed this approach and insist on maintaining restrictions. The announced easing was in doubt. It is expected that the government will announce its final decision today on December 21.

Epidemiologists fear that easing during the holidays will increase the rate of spread of COVID-19 and negate the results achieved due to strict restrictions. over the past two weeks, the daily increase in cases has almost halved — from more than 5 thousand to less than 3 thousand. At the same time, the recovery rate increased to 86%. so far, mortality remains at a high level. there are currently 26,077 active covid-19 cases in the country. Of these, the condition of 1,104 patients is severe.
